All You Need to Know about Acne Scar Laser Treatments

Acne Scars Can Be Removed

Before the development of acne scar laser treatment the only way that this problem can be dealt with was through the use of dermabrasion. With this method the top layer of skin that was scarred was removed by a procedure that entailed the affected area to be sanded.

As well as being quite painful the patient would have to wait for the look and condition of their skin to improve. In fact in many cases the patients would have to wait several months to see any improvements as this was the amount of time that new skin needed to grow back.

Whereas when it comes to acne scar laser treatment the patient will need to undergo several courses of treatment. But in most cases each course of treatment required will last only between 20 and 30 minutes rather than the person having to spend several hours undergoing dermabrasion.

When it comes to acne scar laser treatment the surgeon carrying out the work uses a wand like instrument from which a laser beam of light is released. They direct this beam of light on the skin cells that are scarred and it then burns them off.

As this procedure is so precise the surgeon is able to target only the areas of the body where the skin tissue that is affected is to be found so leaving the surrounding unaffected skin tissue alone. But along with being able to direct the beam of light on to the area of skin affected the surgeon is also able to control the depth to which the laser is able to penetrate to the skin below. This means that the whole area of affected skin tissue can be removed not only more quickly but also more easily.

When a surgeon is carrying out this type of treatment there are two different types of lasers that are used. Below we take a brief look at what these are.

1. Erbium (ER) Laser – The energy that this laser produces is on a very precise wavelength and so allows it to penetrate the skin more easily. No feeling of heat is felt by the person being treated with this laser as the moisture found in the skin absorbs it easily and so the heat that has been produced by it scatters without affecting the normal skin surrounding the affected area.

2. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Laser This is a new form of laser technology and it emits in short bursts extremely high energy laser light that is also highly focused. When it comes into to contact with scarred skin it causes it to be vaporized a layer at the time whilst leaving new skin behind. But in order for a person to be able to undergo this particular procedure there are certain medical parameters that they must conform to.

It doesnít matter which form of acne scar laser treatment a person undergoes both are effective at removing these skin irregularities permanently. Although the technology used is very advance most people who undergo this form of treatment find that they donít suffer any ill effects afterwards compared with say dermabrasing.
